Fissure Sealants

Fissures are grooves found in the enamel of teeth. Fissure sealants are a plastic coating that is applied to fill and seal fissures and pits on the top of teeth acting as a smooth protective barrier to prevent the retention of food debris, plaque and bacteria in these fissures which causes decay.

Fissure sealants are primarily placed onto adult molar teeth and occasionally premolar teeth. Some teeth naturally form with deep grooves, which will need to be sealed while others with shallow ones will not need sealing.

The process is usually quick and totally pain free. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned, prepared with a special solution and dried, the liquid sealant is then applied and set hard by shining a light onto it.
