What are veneers?

A veneer is a very thin shell or covering that is placed on the front of your tooth to improve its look or strength. They are made of a porcelain laminate composite that has been created to improve the aesthetics and durability of your natural teeth.

When are veneers used

If your teeth are permanently discoloured, resistant to whitening treatments, chipped, cracked or misshapen, ask your dentist about veneers. They are also a good choice to remove gaps between your teeth, correct an off tooth position or adjust minor bite-related problems.

Placing veneers

When you have decided with your dentist that veneers are the best option for your needs, a small layer will be taken off of the front of your teeth. This amount is usually less than a millimetre and makes it so the veneers will not add extra bulk to your existing teeth.

A light-sensitive resin bond is placed on your tooth and then the veneer is fitted. The resin is then hardened with a special light, completing the bond.

There are standard veneers and a minimal or “no-prep” veneer option. These veneers do not require as much of the tooth to be removed before being applied and are usually bonded more quickly.
