What are dentures?
Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth. They usually consist of a removable tray that fits over your gums with false teeth attached to it. They need to be removed nightly and cleaned daily in order to remain in good functional condition.
Why are dentures
important?
Aside from aesthetic reasons, having replacement teeth is important to the overall health of your mouth and jaw. When there is a space providing no support, remaining teeth will shift, move and fall into the space. Bacteria and food particles are also more likely to find a home in the space and cause problems.
Your jawbone can also begin to deteriorate without the support of teeth and your face can ‘sink in,’ causing difficulties in chewing and speaking.
Types of dentures
The two main types are full dentures and partial dentures.
A full denture is used when there are no remaining natural teeth on the upper or lower jaw and the tray contains a full set of upper or lower teeth.
A partial denture can be made of Vitallium or acrylic. Acrylic is cheaper and is used when the remaining teeth are not quite healthy enough to support a Vitallium denture. Vitallium dentures are not as affordable and can be difficult to add, but are a much more durable option.
