What is an implant supported denture?

While a typical denture rests on the gums or suctions to the roof of your mouth, an implant supported denture has special attachments that snap onto surgically placed implants in your gums. This allows for more stability and strength in the denture.

What are the benefits of an implant supported denture?

Because the denture is supported directly by your jawbone and not the suction between the denture and the roof of your mouth, the denture is much more stable. You can eat foods that you would otherwise have to stay away from. You can also speak and chew more comfortably without worrying about the denture slipping or falling out of your mouth.

What is the implant procedure?

The implants will be placed into your jawbone during the first surgery. A temporary denture can be worn two to three weeks after this initial surgery.

After the gums and bone heal completely four to six months after the first surgery, a second surgery will be scheduled. This surgery will involve a small incision in the gums to expose the implant tips. A cap is placed on each implant to guide the gums to heal in a specific shape.

Once the gums have healed, the caps will be replaced with regular abutments and dentures will be realigned to fit the implants.

Taking proper care of your dentures

As with any type of denture, your implant supported dentures need to be taken out nightly and thoroughly cleaned. You will need to be careful to not leave your denture lying around anywhere that could cause it to accidentally break or incur damage.

The clip and other attachments will also need to be cleaned, cared for and regularly checked for wear. They will need to be replaced every six to twelve months.
